SANTA ANA, CA - The ninth class of the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame was inducted on Sunday, October 2 in the courtyard of the Exercise Science Locker Room Complex.
The Class of 2011 is Matthew Lien (men’s basketball), Trevor Mortensen (baseball), Tomas Serna (men’s soccer), Leroy Whittle (football), Roger Wilson (coach/athletic director/dean) and the 1962 National Championship football team.
Highlights from this year's induction ceremony included playful joking between SAC football coach Dick Gorrie, former SAC basketball coach Dana Pagett and Wilson.
Prior to that, Mortensen's brother, Shawn, shared a touching story about Trevor that embodied, as Shawn put it, how Trevor was a "hall of fame person."
The event was capped off with the reunion of the 1962 football team as about 20 members of the team stood in front of the stage as former assistant coach Bill Dutton told stories of their National Championship season.
The Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2003 to celebrate, recognize and honor the accomplishments of individuals who have made significant contributions as a student-athlete, coach or friend to the rich tradition of the Santa Ana College athletic program.
In order to be eligible for induction, all athletes must have last competed at least five years prior to induction and coaches must have not coached for at least two years.
The Hall of Fame is an affiliate organization of the Santa Ana College Foundation and is dedicated to preserving the college's athletic history while providing new opportunities to transferring student-athletes through scholarships.
