SANTA ANA, CA - The Santa Ana College (SAC) Foundation held the 2012 Ed Arnold Golf Classic at Dove Canyon Country Club on Monday, April 16, 2012. Proceeds from the event will benefit student-athlete scholarships, the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the athletic department at SAC.
This year, the SAC Foundation announced that the First American Foundation is sponsoring the six scholarships that will be presented to SAC student-athletes.
“Parker Kennedy and First American’s support is a testament to their belief in our students and the importance of the work that community colleges do for the workforce and higher education," said Christina Romero, executive director, college advancement & foundation. "Santa Ana College is more than grateful for their loyalty and support. Without them, our programs and students would not be able to grow and succeed as they have for almost 100 years. This type of gift shows the connection that community colleges and industry must make to continue to build a stronger community."
Tournament host, Ed Arnold, also expressed his gratitude for the First American Financial Corporation and its continued support of the college.
"It shows First American's continued interest in supporting the student-athletes at Santa Ana College," said Arnold. "It's something they have done since the 1950's. It's something that I remember when I first attended the college in 1961."
The six scholarships, each worth $1,500, were presented during the awards ceremony that followed the golf tournament. This year's scholarship recipients are Bryan Kawata (baseball), Janelle Flores (women's basketball), Elaine Guerrero (volleyball), Trevor Magno (baseball), Andy Peterson (baseball) and Hannah Tucker (women's basketball). Kawata and Flores received the scholarships as the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year.
The tournament was a four-person, team-scramble format with awards presented to flight champions and winners of the closest-to-the pin, longest drive and putting contests.
In 2003, the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame Golf Classic was renamed the Ed Arnold Golf Classic in honor of SAC Hall of Fame member (1980), SAC Athletic Hall of Fame member (2009) and Orange and Los Angeles Counties broadcasting legend Ed Arnold.
Following his tour of duty with the United States Marine Corp, in 1966, Arnold graduated from SAC where he earned an associate of arts degree in business and played football for the Dons before transferring to California State University, Long Beach to earn his bachelor's degree in broadcasting.
