Volleyball Wins on Sophomore Night Over Santiago Canyon
The Dons defeated Santiago Canyon College in their last home match of the 2016 season in three sets. The set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.
SANTA ANA- The Dons defeated Santiago Canyon College in their last home match of the 2016 season in three sets. The set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-21.
The first point went to the Dons (9-10, 4-9) off a block from freshman Kassandra Murillo and freshman Lily Reissmuller. Freshman Mikelle Taylor scored the first kill for the Dons. Then SAC had a few balls go out of bounds to tie the score 4-4. Hannah De Grasse broke the tie with a kill and assist from sophomore Haylie Slater. Sophomore Viridiana Serrano scored a point to take the lead 7-5 and then sophomore Filana Duvan had two aces to hold on to the lead. Serrano finished the first set with a kill and a 25-21 win for the Dons.
The Hawks opened the second set with the first two points. Taylor scored an ace to bring the Dons' score up to 5-8. The Hawks reacted with another point to bring their lead up to four points. Serrano attacked with a kill and an assist from Taylor to bring the score up for the Dons. During the set, sophomore Dayne Bogosian scored a point from an assist by Haylie Slater to only trail Santiago Canyon by one point. Then Slater had three aces in a row to bring the Dons to a 22-19 lead. The Dons won the second set 25-23.
In the third set, the first point went to SAC from an attack from Serrano. The Hawks tied the score 1-1. Freshman Nekea Strong scored her first ace of the match to bring the lead up to 3-2. Slater scored to extend the lead for SAC. Kassandra Murillo fought defensively by blocking out the Hawks and Slater then gave Viridiana Serrano an assist for a kill to bring the lead for SAC to 21-19. Serrano had another ace to extend the lead 23-20 and won the third set 25-21 and the game 3-0.
During the match, sophomore Haylie Slater beat the 2007 record for most assists in a season by having a total of 573 assists so far this season.
Volleyball will play again on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Irvine Valley College at 6 p.m.
