2013 Ed Arnold Golf Classic Held at Mission Viejo CC
The Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame, in conjunction with the Santa Ana College Foundation, hosted a full field of golfers at Mission Viejo Country Club for the 2013 Ed Arnold Golf Classic.
MISSION VIEJO - Under very sunny skies on May 13, the Santa Ana College Athletic Hall of Fame, in conjunction with the Santa Ana College Foundation, hosted a full field of golfers at Mission Viejo Country Club for the 2013 Ed Arnold Golf Classic. Proceeds from the event will benefit student-athlete scholarships, the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame as well as the athletic department at SAC.
The annual golf tournament, held the last two years at Dove Canyon Country Club, proved to be a success at the latest location. Golfers included SAC staff, administration, former athletes and Hall of Famers.
Following the day on the course, golfers were treated to an awards dinner that featured a live and silent auction, the presentation of scholarships to SAC student-athletes and the introduction of the Class of 2013, to be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame later this year.
The annual scholarships, each worth $1,500, are awarded to transferring student-athletes as well as the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year. The recipients were Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Tyler Cordell (football), Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Yesenia Fonseca (women's soccer), JB Bryant (baseball), Eryn Martinez (softball), Berlin Ohanesian (women's basketball), Kevin Ramirez (men's basketball) and Devon Rodriguez (softball).
Rodriguez, who will be transferring to the University of Buffalo, spoke on behalf of the student-athletes.
"Thank you for all that you do to make our dreams possible for all of us, " Rodriguez said. "We are all very grateful for the scholarships and all of your support."
Following that presentation, Master of Ceremonies and tournament host, Ed Arnold, led a live auction to help raise more funds for the Hall of Fame and scholarships before introducing the Class of 2013.
The next induction class will feature Elle Cruikshank (women's track & field), Dick Gorrie (coach, football and men's golf), Pat Burris (wrestling) and the 1977 women's volleyball team that won the first ever state championship.
The tournament was a four-person, team-scramble format with awards presented to flight champions and winners of the closest-to-the pin, longest drive and putting contests.
In 2003, the SAC Athletic Hall of Fame Golf Classic was renamed the Ed Arnold Golf Classic in honor of SAC Hall of Fame member (1980), SAC Athletic Hall of Fame member (2009) and Orange and Los Angeles Counties broadcasting legend Ed Arnold.
Following his tour of duty with the United States Marine Corp, in 1966, Arnold graduated from SAC where he earned an associate of arts degree in business and played football for the Dons before transferring to California State University, Long Beach to earn his bachelor's degree in broadcasting.
